TENNIS CLINCHES PLAYOFF POSITION
Tennis is the first Birdville team this year to clinch a
position in the playoffs.
Birdville who is District 7-5A faces an onslaught of talented tennis teams, and managed to solidify their playoff spot on Tuesday night.
Tuesday they matched up against Colleyville Heritage in a showdown that would determine second and third place for playoffs. For every district match teams play best of 19, singles, doubles and mixed doubles. Simple math, you win 10 you win the match. Tuesday night the match swung Colleyville's direction, but there is redemption in the Hawks near future.
Hawks are currently 5-2 in district, only losing to top seeded Argyle and Colleyville. Hawks won handily over Denton, Denton Ryan and Richland. Lake Dallas is a forfeited win due to a lack of participants. Even though 4 of the 5 matches came seamlessly easy for the Hawks, they had a classic showdown with Grapevine.
Hawks faced the Mustangs in week 4 of district and went blow for blow. Grapevine, a historically solid team, walked away with defeat as the Hawks edged them out with a match win of 10-9. Despite that loss the Mustangs are still in the playoff picture, capturing fourth place. Birdville solidified third, Colleyville second with the win on Tuesday, and Argyle holds an undefeated record and first place solidly.
Coach Celina Burris is the current Head Coach for the Hawk Tennis team and has been for the past 19 years. Out of 19 years the Hawks have seen playoffs a total of 15 times, the farthest run taking them all the way to the Regional Semi-Finals. After the Colleyville's match Coach Burris said, "We could have won that match, but we can get another shot at them in playoffs. We will be ready for them then."
Birdville could potentially face the Panthers a few rounds into playoffs, but first they will have to get by either Burleson Centennial or Midlothian High in the Bi-District round. The Hawks playoff run will start on October 10th.
