BASKETBALL BACK IN ACTION

BASKETBALL BACK IN ACTION

Hawk Basketball season has officially started. Women’s Basketball is set to take the court this week, while Men’s Basketball will follow suit in one week. Big hopes and expectations lead both Hawk teams into the season.

Women’s basketball is slated for their first day of practice October 18th and first game to follow quickly on November 7th. The Hawks have five seniors who will add depth and leadership to a seemingly young team. Among those returners are Mia Lacour and Brooklyn Iman. Lacour was second on the team in points per game and field goal percentage, ending the season with 172 points to her name. Brooklyn was a defensive staple for the Hawks, leading the 2022 team in rebounds claiming 184.

The Hawks are led by Coach Rod Johnson. Johnson is in his 5th year at the helm of Birdville Basketball. Last season the Hawks had crucial wins over Richland twice, and ended 5th overall in District, just shy of the playoffs. Johnson and his team amassed 15 wins which was more than double the past records, putting the 2023 team in a good position. There are new faces mixed in with seasoned vets that are sure to make this year a fun one to watch.

Men’s Basketball starts one week after women's and have been preparing hard for the upcoming season.

Coach Anthony Holman starts his second year as the Head Coach of Hawk Basketball team following his predecessor Coach Jeff Fitch. Fitch was the first Men’s Basketball coach at Birdville High School and held that title for 23 years, until he retired and passed the baton to his former player and assistant of 10 years, Holman. Holman has experienced success with Birdville Basketball from the time he was a player here from ‘99-02 where he was named District MVP and All-Region, as an assistant under the Fitch regime, and in his first season in command.

First year into the Holman era the Hawks went 17-14 and 9-5 in district, snagging second place and a playoff berth. The Hawks lost a heart-breaking loss in the playoffs to Burleson Centennial 50-49, cutting their run short for the 2022-2023 season. The Hawks are looking to reload this year with some seasoned vets.

With quite a few returners, there is no shortage of talent, top athletes to keep an eye out for include Seniors - Niko Lucero and Joshua Zakaria and Juniors - Trent Bowers and Tasshir Pina-Warren. Hawks official start date is October 25th with their first game on November 11th.

You can catch the first home women's basketball game on November 7th when they face off against Newman Smith. Men’s basketball will have their first home stand on November 14th against Fort Worth Christian. Excited for the new season of possibilities, both teams are ready to head into season locked and loaded.

Til Next Time,

Go Hawks
